Galentine's Day - and why we should all be celebrating

Sunday, 10 February 2019

Friendships are so important for our well-being. Friends are the people we can speak to freely without consequence. The ones we trust and are trusted by. The people who can tell us we're being stupid without making us feel stupid. This is why (unofficial) holidays like Galentine's Day are so special.

Celebrated on the 13th of February, the day before Valentine's, Galentine's Day is a day for "ladies celebrating ladies", or friends celebrating friends.

The day is not anti-Valentine's, it's in addition to, and it's just as much about love.

In the wise words of one of my favourite women, Parks and Recreation's Leslie Knope:
“Every February 13, my ladyfriends and I leave our husbands and our boyfriends at home, and we just come and kick it, breakfast-style. Ladies celebrating ladies. It’s like Lilith Fair, minus the angst. Plus frittatas.”

It's almost the best day of the year, after Christmas and Parks and Rec's other amazing holiday - Treat Yo Self Day - which falls in October.

Whilst Valentine's and now Galentine's are somewhat cheesy and unashamedly commercialised, I don't see anything wrong in celebrating love, and showing appreciation for our loved ones this month - whether we're buying a gift, sharing waffle's à la Leslie Knope, or just telling our friends how much they mean to us.

Like the holiday it precedes, Galentine's is all about love, and showing the important people in our lives how much we cherish and care about them.

Will you be celebrating Galentine's this year?

  1. Nice post. I don't celebrate Valentine's day but I am considering celebrating Galentine's.

    1. It's such a nice excuse to finally get together with your friends - whether you're going out, or staying in for a pamper sesh/movie night x
